Mar.In.E.M. is a novel, non-profit Organisation, established in 2010 with the aim to promote Research as well as Technology, Innovation, Education and Training within the context of a Sustainable Blue Growth.At the same time, Mar.In.E.M. acts as a Forum but also as an Incubator of Business Opportunities on Marine and Maritime issues, encouraging and facilitating Dialogue, Networking and Cooperation within the Eastern Mediterranean region, a particularly significant region for the global economy.Outmost vision of Mar.In.E.M. is the establishment of an active research driven

“Maritime Cluster of the Eastern Mediterranean”, that will strengthen and enhance cooperation of the Region’s countries, in line with the EU’s Blue Paper for an Integrated Maritime Policy as well as the ‘Limassol Declaration’.The Institute is involved in various sectors of Maritime Affairs including:o Marine and Maritime Technology and Innovation – participating in the EU FP7 Funded Research Project “Lynceus” which is currently ongoing and refers to the development of an innovative technology onboard passenger ships, which will enable the timely and efficient location of passengers during emergency situations. The Institute also participated in a joint project for the development of a low cost, energy autonomous, smart data buoy for water quality and environmental monitoring.o Maritime Clusters – participating in the “Maritime Clusters supporting Research & Innovation to enhance Blue Economy Entrepreneurship” Project, with acronym “CoRINThos”. The project will mapping the current situation on a national and transnational level and define the success factors characterizing maritime clusters through benchmarking of EU and international relevant best practices. “CoRINThos” will tackle R&D gaps as driving factors of maritime clusters. These R&D gaps will be identified and contextualized through a methodology designed to define an eco-systemic sector & geographical synergies among maritime established and emerging sectors at MED level: the hypothesis of a Blue economy scenario.o Maritime Labour – investigating the labour constraints currently faced in the maritime sector and ways to attract young people into maritime professions widely known as the “Blue Careers”. Mar.In.E.M. has established an annual event called “Blue Career”. The aim of the event is to inform the society and especially young people, about the employment opportunities in the Marine and Maritime Industry.o Maritime Education and Training – supporting the development of Schools and Academies in Maritime Studies (focusing to Maritime Technology & Transportation), in cooperation with governmental and private educational institutes, but also managing the “Odysseus Maritime Training Centre” based in Limassol.o Maritime Tourism – with the submission of proposals for the promotion of cruising in the Eastern Mediterranean area, through the cooperation of all the regional countries – “The Cruise East Med Forum”.o Maritime Transport – with efforts to promote the Maritime Connection of East Med countries. In this context, the Institute manages the “Cyprus Short Sea Promotion Centre” (CSPC), whose objectives are between others the promotion, collection and dissemination of information, education and research in issues related to Short Sea Shipping. The CSPC participated in the "ESN, The Way Forward" projectHORIZON 2020 PROFILE FORMwhich was financed by the framework of the Marco Polo Programme of the EC. Mar.In.E.M. is participating also in the ongoing project, “Mediterranean Network for Customs Procedures and Simplification of Clearance in Ports” (MEDNET) Project, which is financed by the framework of the Med Programme of the EC. The main aim of the project is the simplification and harmonization of port and customs procedures within the Mediterranean region (www.mednetproject.eu).o Maritime Security and Surveillance – with interventions in “Search and Rescue” issues, but also with the development of maritime search and rescue technologies.o Marine Environment and Sustainability – participating, in cooperation with Academic Institutions, in air emissions reduction programs for ships, sea water environmental monitoring, etc.o Marine Protected Areas/ Artificial Reefs – promoting the establishment of MPAs and the development of Artificial Reefs as a mean to enhance the fish stocks in an area seriously affected by the human activities through the centuries.o Maritime Heritage – with involvement in projects such as the excavation of the Ancient Wreck at Mazotos coast, the maintenance of the traditional boat “Lambousa” for Limassol Municipality and the promotion of the establishment of a “Maritime Heritage Research Centre of the East Med” as well as a relevant Museum.
