Research Infrastructures Action

Research infrastructures play an increasing role in the advancement of knowledge andtechnology and their exploitation. For example, radiation sources, data banks in genomics orin social science, observatories for environmental sciences, systems of imaging or cleanrooms for the study and development of new materials or nano-electronics, are at the core ofresearch and innovation processes. By offering high quality research services to users fromdifferent countries, including from the peripheral and outermost regions, by attracting youngpeople to science and by networking facilities, research infrastructures help structuring thescientific community and play a key role in the construction of an efficient research andinnovation environment. Because of their ability to assemble a ‘critical mass’ of people,knowledge and investment, they contribute to national, regional and European economicdevelopment. They are therefore at the core of the knowledge triangle of research, educationand innovation.
