The overall objective of this project is to tackle the overwhelming solid waste management problem, which the Cross Border areas face during the high summer touristic season.
The following main outputs will be delivered:
1. A network of local waste producers in Corfu and Saranda in order to identify the current waste management practices.
2. Having full knowledge of international best practices and of the current situation in waste management procedures new protocols will be prepared for the pre-separation stage for waste producers and waste collection stage from local authorities.3. Supply of brand new infrastructure dedicated to organic waste collection 4. Waste samples will be analyzed in chemical laboratories by the NTUA in order to identify all possible scenarios for the common solution to the problem in the Cross Border Area. 5. A novel information system for optimization of the dedicated collection network. 6. An action plan addressing the problem of economies of scales where critical parameters will be defined, such as, the maximum environmental tolerance of each area during tourist session, environmental impact from growth of tourism industry and the cost of waste treatment for each area.7. A sustainability plan will be developed, in order to examine the possible scope for cooperation between neighboring areas to commonly tackle their shared waste management problem. 8. Information and education material as well as publications in scientific journals and conferences.
